Texas Children's Hospital Culture

Redefining A Culture of Care

When you’re a 14,000-employee children’s hospital ranked third in the nation, you have to recruit the best in the business. And beyond achievements and accolades, a great culture is what attracts new prospects and keeps them there. For the last 5 years we’ve worked with Texas Children’s to define their culture, redesign their careers website, concept and launch a patient experience program, and completely redesign their new employee orientation.

After months of research and interviews with key stakeholders we defined four new values: Embrace Freedom, Lead Tirelessly, Live Compassionately, and Amplify Unity. For the launch, we sent out popcorn (a company favorite), custom cards with the website link and outfitted a launch team with custom t-shirts.

Without deviating from the existing color and typographic palette, we created a fresh, modern look for the brand that we began to apply to other parts of their culture.

We completely redesigned the organization’s careers site that celebrated its new culture and represented how Texas Children’s is different. To supplement the existing and somewhat dated visual content, we captured photography and video at multiple campuses in the Houston area.

We were then tasked with defining a new patient experience training program for a new location in The Woodlands. We defined it as “chrp” an acronym that nodded to the suburban locale and created a memorable set of mantras.

To take the patient experience beyond training, we created an activity booklet for children that brought our bird icon, aka Scout, to life. The booklet contains spaces for stamps that represent different areas of the hospital, making doctor visits a little less scary.

Our latest project focused on overhauling the organization’s new employee orientation. We called it TC Hi, fashioned after a high school pep rally complete with a “bell schedule” based on the four core values.

TC Hi turned what was normally an uneventful orientation into an experience that’s galvanized new employees and added to the list of things that make Texas Children’s Hospital truly unique.
